Upcoming Events

We have several events coming up on our Discord server. Tomorrow, December 27, we will be instadrabbling, first at 9:00 UTC and again at midnight UTC. (Convert to your timezone here.) Next Sunday, January 3, we will host a Tolkien ficlet reading, at 16:00 UTC. You can sign up for the ficlet reading here. (Please sign up only if you are relatively confident you will be able to attend! Sign ups help with planning only; we will reserve "open mic" spots for people who don't sign up to read. Just show up!) Click the cut for more information on these events.

What is instadrabbling?
Instadrabbling is a social/creative activity in which fanworks creators gather to make and share fanworks in real-time. Traditionally, instadrabbling involves a prompt (four words chosen at random from the nearest book at hand) shared with the group, who then write traditional drabbles and post them for much oohing, aahing, and squeeing. However, far preferring inclusivity to tradition on the SWG, our version of instadrabbling welcomes participants to create all kinds of fanworks. Sketch, make a playlist, work on your cosplay while socializing with others, or just stop by to enjoy the fanworks and the company ... all are welcome! While we ask that fanworks shared be Tolkien-related, they do not need to be Silmarillion-related.

How will the ficlet reading work?
We have a voice channel on the SWG Discord server that we will use for the reading. Any Tolkien-based ficlet is eligible; for the purpose of this event, we are defining a "ficlet" as a piece of writing that is 500 words or less. You should be the author of any ficlets you read. You may read more than one but please limit your total reading time to ten minutes or less. While ficlets created for instadrabbling are most welcome, any Tolkien-related ficlet is welcome! If you know for sure you want to participate, sign up for the ficlet reading here. Again, anyone who shows up and wants to read will be welcome, so if you're not sure you can attend, don't sign up--just show up! We'll have room for you.

If you're not a member of our Discord server but want to be, you can email us at [email protected] for an invite code. We will post an open invite here on the day of instadrabbling. Finally, if you sign up for the reading, there is a space to request an invite.

We have several additional events coming up on our Discord server over the next two months, including a "Naturalist's Guide to Middle-earth" image instadrabble, two fanfiction book clubs for "Of Dwarves and Men" and smut fanfic, and a fanfiction reading. Join the server or email the mods for more information.

Reminder: Tributes to Rhapsody

If you wish to include a tribute to Rhapsody in our collection, please make sure you have emailed it to [email protected] by January 2. Whether several paragraphs or a single sentence, all tributes from those who knew Rhapsody, enjoyed her stories, or appreciated her service to the Tolkien fandom are welcome.
