[admin post] Admin Post: Official Website Reopening!



I am thrilled to announce that the Silmarillion Writers' Guild website has reopened after migrating to our new software! You can still find us at silmarillionwritersguild.org, and we always welcome new members.

In 2019, an upgrade on our web server through our aging archive software into disarray. Faced with the choice of rebuilding the site with new software or watching our site slowly die, as our software became increasingly obsolete, we chose to rebuild. And here we are now, with a new site that we hope will offer new and better features than our old archive.

We also hope to expand the site, especially to different types of fanworks. We've started by creating parity between written fanworks and audio fanworks and series, which were treated differently on our old site. We'll be adding other types of fanworks in the months to come.

This is an important turning point for the SWG, and we're elated to have made it this far! Watch this space for the announcement of an official ribbon-cutting event in the next couple of weeks!

I just read through the new Site Etiquette and Terms of Service, and for the first time, I feel comfortable joining for thanks to the more explicit stance towards equity and further control over user interaction with my work!

Time to start up a profile, methinks.

The stance on equity is new work for us. While it has been a part of our more nebulous value system as a group for a long time, we felt it was time to "make it official," so to speak. All that to say that we are very open to feedback as to how we are doing in this regard because, as equity work always is, it is both a work-in-progress and a learning experience for us.

Unfortunately, I seem to be finding a consistent error when trying to make a new account, from multiple links and in multiple browsers. The page says: "LogicException: An anonymous user must be identified by session ID. in Drupal\flag\FlagService->getAllEntityFlaggings() (line 176 of modules/flag/src/FlagService.php)."

Should I be getting an error on the front page right now? silmarillionwritersguild.org leads to https://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/silmarillionwritersguild/index.php which has a menu and a sidebar, but where I suppose main page content is meant to be, it just says "The requested page could not be found."

The first time I tried to access the site in its new home, I got the same error.

Could you try again and let me know if it's persisting for you? The homepage is loading just fine for me.

I'm still seeing "The requested page could not be found.", by the way. Firefox, Chrome, and Edge (which I never use heh) as well as Safari on my iPad and my husband sees the same on his computer too. What should be in that area, anyway?

edit: it seems like sometimes when I enter https://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/ it forwards to https://silmarillionwritersguild.org/silmarillionwritersguild/index.php (which gives the failure message) and sometimes it doesn't (and looks OK). Bizarre behavior.

Thanks for the update. I'm sorry we haven't found a solution yet. It's a redirect error; we have the site set to redirect the root directory to the directory where the site is actually stored.

I'll mention it again to Russa and see if she made any progress on it.

I tried a workaround so that the "access denied" error at least returns the content from the front page. Are you seeing anything different now? I briefly (for one day) got the redirect error when accessing the site at work, but I'm not getting it now so can't test if my workaround is, well, working. :D

Hard to confirm either way since the base domain seems to be forwarding me properly in all three browsers now. If I deliberately go to https://silmarillionwritersguild.org/silmarillionwritersguild/index.php I still get "The requested page could not be found", but there's no reason to do that. Sorry to be such a headache! I wouldn't worry about spending more time on this :)
