My original plan for multimedia fanworks was to use the Paragraphs module that we use for all the other fanwork types and have creators select the type of fanwork they wanted which, using another module called Conditional Fields, would then select just the fields needed to upload the fanwork directly into the form.
But then I found out that Conditional Fields don't work with Paragraphs. By this point, I was so psyched about the idea of multimedia fanworks that I actually did despair a little, thinking there was no way to make this work with my intermediate-level skills. Then this idea came to me.
And as I thought about it more, the more I liked the idea for the reason you said. If I already have a story on the archive and I do an illustration for it three years later, I can easily tack on the existing story with the artwork; if I mark the story "Multimedia Only," I still keep the comments and direct links to the fic still work. If I'm posting a multimedia fanwork from scratch, I have to upload the component fanworks first, but I would have had to do that (in a slightly different manner, but still) with the original idea. But if I'm working with fanworks already on the archive, that becomes much easier than the original approach I had in mind.
I hope it's used and enjoyed; this particular addition, of the many I've done/am doing this year, is one I'm most excited about.
