Date: 2009-03-22 03:13 pm (UTC)I had to laugh at your assessment that Category 1s and tropical storms are no big deal. Spoken like a true Floridian! :) Having been through nothing more than a tropical storm, I have to say that I am content that things stay that way!

Date: 2009-03-22 09:46 pm (UTC)They truly aren't, as long as you follow the safety precautions and don't do anything stupid, like not evacuating when told to. And I'm a (former) Floridian simply because I'm also a Navy brat-- I didn't have a choice of where to live. The local newspaper used to print a fairly long booklet every summer filled with advice, tips, numbers to call, and other stuff. It's something that may seem strange to people who don't live in hurricane-prone areas, but it's a fact of life on the coast. One will hit-- it may not be this year, but it will happen.
I hope you don't go through anything stronger! They really aren't fun.

Story: The Horn of the Kine

Background: When I moved to Illinois, I had some anxious moments when the spring storms hit, since I'd never been anywhere near tornado country before. To date, I have had a near-miss with two tornadoes: the first in 2006, I think it was, when a spray of hail suddenly hit the glass front window of the cafe I was in, and the sky went dark; and last year, when I almost failed to realize that the funny-sounding noise outside was actually the tornado siren going off. The first one landed maybe a hundred yards out in Lake Michigan after passing right over the university; the second never made it to Chicago, but I spent a terrified half an hour hiding in the basement, just to be on the safe side, since I had neither a radio nor working internet at the time.
So I've never really experienced a tornado that was a serious threat. I hope never to do so, but I imagine that if I were to, it might feel something like this...
Dedication: Katzilla, this one's for you.

Date: 2009-03-23 02:43 pm (UTC)The story was fabulous. It was about Eomer experiencing the storm, but it was equally as much about every other member of the eored and even their families. I loved the sense of collectiveness that the story carries with it, and Bywulf was awesome :-) Thanks for a great story! (And for the links. I'll listen to that tape recording as soon as I get the chance. I think it's amazing that they caught that!)

Author: Linda Hoyland
Characters/Pairing: Faramir, Aragorn
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Book/Source: LOTR book-verse

The wind howled, making the long grass ripple like water. Branches creaked and groaned, the weakest snapping, blowing away as if they were as light as leaves. Then came the lightening, illuminating the leaden skies in brilliant flashes. Thunder roared, while the rain lashed down, striking the earth as if with spears.
Huddled against a rocky outcrop, Aragorn and Faramir observed nature’s fury.
“We could always go home,” Faramir suggested.
“And have our wives tease us for not liking getting wet? I think not!”
In Valinor, Ossë laughed as King and ploughman alike raced to take shelter from his sport.
