[personal profile] dawn_felagund posting in [community profile] silwritersguild
The SWG moderators have recently been discussing the possibility of setting up a "satellite group" on Tumblr. Like our current satellite groups on LiveJournal, Dreamwidth, and Yahoo! Groups, this group would be run under the SWG guidelines as a space for the Silmarillion fandom.

The problem is that none of the SWG moderators have much experience with Tumblr! While we all have accounts there, none of us are heavy users of the site and so feel woefully unprepared to make the best decisions in getting the group set up.

We are seeking volunteers to discuss setting up a Tumblr satellite group for the SWG. No particular experience is necessary--just a willingness to help us iron our the particulars and probably answer the occasional silly question! :) We will also eventually be seeking moderators for the Tumblr group and will give strong preference to those who have helped to get the group set up.

If you're interested in helping out with this, please comment on this post with your email address, as well as your preference for how we hold the discussion (email, LiveJournal, Yahoo! mailing list, etc.). If there is a particular venue where you will not participate in discussion, please let us know that as well. All comments are screened and we will not unscreen any comment with personal information in it. You may also email us at [email protected], if you prefer.

I just had this idea shortly before falling asleep (I know I know, sleep is important too), but... if we set up a side blog for sharing stuff (newsletter, ssp'ing ect), how about a side blog (how many side blogs can you create? Elleth, do you know??) for only discussions? You only add those members who have agreed to the SWG TOS and site etiquette (we probably might have to create a special one for Tumblr perhaps to enforce more civility since that is a big wish of Silm Tumblr-ettes), and who will also promise that once the blog question gets reblogged out of the SWG sphere, they will not engage in the behaviour that 'trolls' might call them out for. Is that an idea? I mean if people knowingly have read the etiquette and are added with posting privileges, it can be easily revoked if they cannot live up to them. This way everyone knows the discussion rules and will live by it, a safe environment is created and if people jeopardise it, the three strikes rule can apply.

I don't know if there is a cap on how many side-blogs you can create, but I have several (layout testing, RPing, as a sort of storage for things I don't want to get lost, Tolkien Trivia, and participating as contributor in UoA and Silmladylove). But I like your idea, per se... with the caveat that people can of course follow that side-blog and reblog from it as they would from any ordinary group, and drag potential discussion into the dirt even if contributors on the blog abide by SWG etiquette and stay civil, so that rule would only affect the blog itself and not fandom at large, though it might work as leading by example?

Leading by example is a must for the mods, imho. It is just that the reblogging option that gives me a headache. I wonder if there is a way to disable reblogging externally... Reblogging only for members and amongst members, but they can't reblog to people outside the group (if it is sql based it should be possible). I just think that Tumblr is just not meant as a discussing platform, it remains a microblog alike twitter, fast paced and ideal for sharing ideas, encouraging others in their arts, sharing artwork ect.
