(Does 2010 count as a long time ago? I hope so, because I can't deal with FFN's search well enough to find an older one.)
Sea Wing by Himring
Rated: Adult
Characters: Idril, Original Character(s)
Challenges: International Day of Femslash 2010
Genres: General, Slash/Femslash
Warnings: Character Death, Mature Themes, Sexual Content--Mild, Violence--Moderate
Summary: At the Havens, as Tuor and Idril prepare to sail into the West, Sador Labadal's niece muses on her fascination with Idril and the fate of the servants of the house of Hurin.
The story is presumably rated for wounds/violence/dark themes; the femslash is not explicit and deals with a young mortal woman's unrequited feelings for Idril. The fate of the people of Dor-lómin after Túrin's chaotic visit is one of the many tragedies of the Silmarillion that Tolkien implies more than describes, and it isn't something I've seen explored a lot in fanfic. I like how this story brings one of those people to life, in the person of the unnamed narrator. I also think it's fair to consider, as this story does by implication, what responsibility the Elves and the Valar have for their situation. This story is very bleak, but also very well-written.
It's deeply sad and moving to me how the narrator and her mother still have faith in King Fingon and dream of him coming to save them -- but then, they have so little hope otherwise. I like this description of Idril visiting the hospital: "Lady Idril never forgets to smile at everyone before she goes in. She never remembers to smile at anyone when she leaves." It underlines what the narrator is realizing, that the Elves can't fend off death and tragedy either. And this is beautiful and evocative: "I hope my lady Idril is going home, back to the country where the light comes from, the place where she was born and that King Fingon also hailed from, they say." I like the description of her half-admitted love as "a last late gift of life." The poor narrator has had so little good in her life, so I'm glad for whatever bits of hope or comfort she can find at the end.

(in the black wind the stars shall die / and still be gold here let them lie): Those who do not belong to this world can still make it grow darker.
This story is wonderfully creepy -- it gives me the shivers. I think too much description would spoil it, so I'll just say that I love the way kimaracretak writes about "horrorterrors" and a Goldberry who is less human-like or safe than the hobbits believe.
I think this must be my favorite line: "But the waters are mine to keep and love and command, and those you may not cross without my leave."

Summary:
The Bëorian refugees have reached Brethil, but their troubles are not over.
I really love this story. I've always wanted to know more about what happened with Emeldir and the women she led from Dorthonion. I love how many female characters there are in this, of all different ages, statuses, and temperaments. It was great to see the women in leadership positions -- taking counsel together, taking care of each other, and making hard decisions -- which is something that happens only exceptionally in Tolkien. The relative lack of women sometimes makes it feel like there are pieces missing from Middle-earth, and it was deeply satisfying to have them put back in the story. It took me a while to realize consciously that no male characters appear in the fic at all.
Beldis and Siriel realizing their feelings for each other are very sweet. (Those poor kids, oh my gosh. They've been through so much and they're losing so much, but they're still so brave.)

Summary: In the waning years of Tar-Palantír's reign, a young woman of the Númenórean nobility and a shepherdess of Hyarastorni find pleasure in one another's company. They know that they must guard the nature of their relationship, but Elerína recalls what her grandmother told her of a great queen who loved a woman.
Written for the International Day of Femslash Challenge.
Having combed through the story of Aldarion and Erendis myself, I think this story is very canon compliant since the Company of Women is referred to in canon. I still love Pandë's take on this, there is so much to this story besides the sensual scenes in it: the vivid scenery as if the author paints the scene for you with words, it just takes you to Numenor. A true gem.

Summary: In observance of the International Day of Femslash (July 19, 2008): Galadriel/Aredhel, a true drabble. According to my research there is one year between the births of these two women, with Galadriel being the younger. Why femslash these two? Why not? They both seem adventurous, rebellious even, and I would imagine quite close in their youths.
Let's dust off this golden oldie. This ficlet is well written: it captures the moment of two teens, showing both characters so well as they bicker a bit before they indulge themselves for more lovemaking.
Oh and I discovered this gorgeous poem earlier this evening (I reviewed it on AO3), but I wanted to rec it here as well (also for the rec and review card, B8 Has fewer than three reviews):
